Heather Fraser
Councillor

My name is Heather Fraser, and I'm pleased to be elected to the AUSU student council for 2008-2010. I am mom to two daughters, age 8 and 10, as well as a rabbit Gingerbread, a dog Jingles, and a cat Buttons.

I live in Kenora, which is in northwest Ontario approximately 1/2 an hour from the Ontario/Manitoba border. Three years ago I moved here from Winnipeg for work purposes, and have loved living on the lake ever since. My day job is with the Ontario Government as an IT Professional aka "Geek" or "Please help me my computer died!!!", but I am also a Midshipman in the Navy League Cadet program, a certified level one baseball Umpire, and a full-time student with Athabasca University!

I started in the Bachelor of Science in Computers and Informations Systems program in fall of 2007, but recently changed programs to the Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Information Systems and Psychology. I realized that my true interest is working with technology in a totally different direction than I am at the moment - special needs children and how technology can enhance their everyday living and education ! AU has really opened my eyes to the diversity of what I can do vs. what I am doing at this very moment.

My previous education includes an Advanced Diploma in Advanced Network Technology from Red River College, a certificate in Network Support Technology from Winnipeg Technical College, and a slew of industry related certifications from just about every big IT business you can think of. Job-wise I've been a pole climber, assistant manager of a fast-food joint, overnight mall cleaner, cashier at a gas station, sandwich maker for a cabinet factory, high school cafeteria lady and a student computer technician for 17 Wing TIS (Department of Defence - Air Force).

In my spare time, I am Social Convenor for the Kenora Swimming Sharks, website coordinator for Tri-Municipal Baseball, clock-girl for Kenora Minor Hockey, and co-chair of the Pow Wow committee that my agency sponsors. I do other volunteer work in my little town of 17,000 with my daughters as well. In the summer, I do a lot of camping with my two daughters, love to play on the lake, amateur photography for local businesses/organizations, and sleep on the beach! I am also a video game nut, as well as a part-time foster parent.

Friday afternoons you can find me in the chat room at 2:00-3:00 PM MST (3:00 - 4:00 PM CST!).
