Jennifer Williatte-Battet
Councillor

Hi, my name is Jennifer Williatte-Battet. I have been a councillor for AUSU since the spring of 2011. I love serving as a councillor for AUSU and I hope to be here for the next term. Among my duties as a councillor, I also sit on the Media Committee and the Awards Committee. It is a pleasure to be involved in the student union and I feel honoured to be chosen to represent our members at AU, the students!

Born in Peterborough, Ontario, I left home after high school to attend art school, first in Toronto, and then in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1996 with a Bachelor of Fine Art. I then moved to the glorious island of Cape Breton where I have been ever since. I am married and have two energetic and creative children. I live on a small farm, so over the years I have raised goats, geese, chickens, and turkeys. In the house we live with and love our golden retriever, Mambo, and our cats, Cashew (she's a little nuts!), Pinot (quirky Siamese), and Yoyo (he's all over the place!).

Living in such a rural area of Nova Scotia, educational resources are scare and when I first decided to further my education I needed something that I could do from home. I first dabbled with distance education when I enrolled in a diploma program in Early Childhood Education through the Nova Scotia Community College in 2007. I loved coming back to school after being away from it for so long and easily fell into a home study rhythm. When I took my first Intro to Psychology course though I was totally hooked and knew I needed more than the diploma program I was pursuing. After a lot of searching I found AU and in 2008, I enrolled as a program student in the Bachelor of Arts, 4 year program, with a Psychology major. Because I received credit from my previous degree I was able to apply it to this program and therefore I only need to do 2 years of full time study. As I am studying part time, I am now just entering into what would be my fourth and final year. While I look forward to graduating, I sincerely don't want my studies to end as I love learning and can't imagine not having it as a part of my life, something I can imagine a lot of my fellow AU students can relate to!

On the personal side, I love the outdoors. I love to run, hike, cross country ski, and dip my toes in the ocean (too cold to swim, brrrr!). When I am not studying I am an avid reader. I divide my reading passions between fiction (modern, historical, Can and Asian lit to name a few favourites) and non-fiction. I love watching movies, indie films and foreign rating high. I also work a lot with textiles, quilting, knitting (currently my obsession!), and sewing. Basically I love to be creative and am interested in almost anything to do with the arts. I am also a huge CBC fan, although I miss a lot of the day time CBC radio, now that I am working on my school work during the day! I hope I was able to give you a sense of who I am and I look forward to continue serving as an AUSU councillor.
