University Certificate in Counselling Women Submitted by Arlene Young, Program Coordinator Women's Studies Can you enrol simultaneously in the certificate and a degree? The short answer is no, you can be only in one program at a time. If you choose courses with care--an AU Advisor can help--you can work toward your degree while completing a certificate. The full 30 credits in the program can be used toward a BA Women's Studies, a BPA Human Services, and a Bachelor of Health Administration. Students need to select electives in the UCCW that are suitable to their intended degree program. The UCCW courses are for university credit and thus are acceptable for continuing competency requirements of the Alberta College of Social Workers. You will see from the brief description that feminist counselling theory and practice will help students acquire better skills for working with women, and just about anyone. Students learn how women's lives are shaped by socially prescribed roles that define their circumstances and choices. Feminist counsellors respect the ways that women seeking help have tried to improve their lot. They understand that the women seeking help have a more complex understanding of their life, family, and community than the counsellor could hope to acquire. They bring knowledge of themselves or counselling into a collaborative counselling relationship. UCCW students acquire interpersonal communications skills based on egalitarian relationships. They also study feminist counselling theory, and learn how to intervene effectively in a crisis, and how to advocate for personal and social change. Depending on students' interests, they may complete their final project, for example, while interning in a counselling or educational agency, crisis intervention centre, or shelter. The UCCW can be the first step toward a degree while you acquire excellent skills for working with women in various settings.
