This Month's Tutor
Dale Lindskog
AU Philosophy Tutor
I have been at Athabasca for
about two years, and currently tutor Philosophy 152 (Basic Critical Reasoning) and Philosophy 252 (Critical Reasoning).
I think I was destined to study philosophy. Prior to my university education, I was constantly puzzled by what
I would now call philosophical problems. For example, when I was about thirteen, I became extremely puzzled by the question,
"What happens when an irresistable force meets an immovable object?" After receiving all kinds of unsatisfactory
answers (I distinctly recall one of my schoolmates proposing that the universe would explode!), I finally received a satisfactory
solution from my chemistry teacher: the question contained a contradiction - it is logically impossible to have both an
irresistable force, and an immovable object.
I grew up in Winnipeg, MB, and there I completed my BA in philosophy. I then went on to complete my MA and PhD at York
University in Toronto.
During the second year of my PhD, we moved to Oxford, UK, where I spent a year as a Visiting Graduate Student. At York,
I tutored in formal logic and critical reasoning.
After completing my graduate studies, in 1999, I moved to Calgary, AB, where I lectured at the University of Calgary
for two and a half years.
My home is now Edmonton, where I live with my spouse (Candace) and daughter (Katharine).
My research interest as a graduate student was the philosophy of Wittgenstein.
Outside philosophy, I also have a strong interest in information systems security. I currently work and teach in
this area as well.
