This Month's Tutor

Petra Spires

French Language

Petra Spires has been a French tutor at Athabasca University for the past three years. She has students in five levels of language study and finds it rewarding to follow her student's progress throughout the duration of their studies. She particularly enjoys having contact with students from across the nation (and continent). Tutor hours represent a linguistic "Cross-Country Check-Up" and she finds that the enthusiasm of her students gives her real hope for the future of bilingualism in Canada.

Petra's credentials include a B.Ed from Faculté St. Jean and a MA specializing in 19th Century French Literature from the University of Alberta. She has taught French at Faculté St. Jean, at the University of Alberta as well as at the University of Lethbridge.

Her travels include numerous explorations of Europe, a study year in France and a summer spent in Quebec. She currently lives in Lethbridge where her husband works as a Spanish professor. In her spare time Petra can be seen with her nose in an epic 19th century French novel, jogging with her husband or strolling with her two young sons.
