AUSU is thrilled to join the Council of Alberta University Students!

We are very proud to announce that the AU Students’ Union has officially joined the Council of Alberta University Students (CAUS).

CAUS represents over 140,000 students across Alberta to the public, government and other post-secondary education stakeholders. By joining CAUS, we also join in an alliance with the undergraduate students from the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, the University of Lethbridge, Mount Royal University, and MacEwan University.

AUSU has been working tirelessly on provincial advocacy initiatives over the past year. The voice of students needs to be heard as we navigate Alberta Government cuts to the post-secondary budget, tuition increases, and the Alberta 2030 post-secondary review.

In recent months, AUSU also worked collaboratively with CAUS and other advocacy groups on numerous initiatives to advocate for post-secondary education in Alberta. In recent months, this included joint press releases to the government regarding the 2019/2020 Alberta provincial budget, rent eviction relief during COVID-19, and student supports due to COVID-19 challenges.

Since Athabasca University is located in Alberta, and university funding is provincial, it means changes to the Alberta post-secondary system directly impact all AU students, no matter where they study from. With the changing post-secondary climate in Alberta, our provincial advocacy is more important now than ever. As such, having a strong alliance with a provincial advocacy group is a great decision for AUSU.

In our November council meeting, the AUSU student council voted unanimously to join with CAUS, to help strengthen our voice, aid in our advocacy efforts on behalf of Athabasca University students, and work together with student leaders from across the province.

“Undergraduate university students are stronger together, and we hope adding our voice and experience will improve post-secondary education in Alberta as well as work to bring lasting improvements for all university students in the province and across the country.

AUSU would like to thank CAUS for their support throughout the process, and the warm reception each CAUS member has given us as we take our provincial advocacy to the next level.”

We are looking forward to working more with CAUS in ongoing advocacy initiatives and helping to raise the voices of Athabasca University students.
