Hi fellow AU Students and AUSU Members!

My name is Natalia (she/her), and I’d like to thank everyone who voted. I’m so excited to advocate on everyone’s behalf.

Before I begin, I’d like to acknowledge that I am currently working remotely from the lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples.

I was born in Poland to a Ukrainian family and moved to Toronto, Ontario as a child. I recently moved back in the Toronto area, after years away in Alberta, B.C. and abroad.

I returned to school in 2017 after a 12-year break as a mature student, and I’m currently in my third year here at AU, completing my Bachelor of Arts in English.

During my time at AU, I’ve tried to get as involved as is possible at an online institution.  Before joining Council, I was the AUSU monthly Meeting Reporter, and I’m currently a weekly writer for our student newspaper, The Voice Magazine, covering topics such as online education, inclusivity, representation, and immigrant/queer identity, chronic illness/disability, and digital accessibility. I also write the monthly AU Graduands column, and recently picked up the weekly Minds We Meet column interviewing students like you!

Outside of AU, I work as a copy editor, writer, and volunteer, as well as running my own freelance business, Natalia Iwanek Editing. I’m also a member of the Student Relations Committee and Communications and Marketing Committee for Editors Canada.

I’m a trivia nerd with a compulsive need to be by the water and an unhealthy obsession with used bookstores, old cheesy horror movies and telenovelas, travelling, cooking, and making all kinds of dumplings. I also love languages, and speak English, Ukrainian, and Spanish, with a bit of Polish.

I’m passionate about advocacy and removing barriers to education amidst rising tuition rates, as well as creating a welcoming environment for everyone. I would love to continue building our virtual student community, furthering Indigenization efforts, and creating safe and accessible spaces for all students, including Accessibility Services.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would just like to chat, feel free to send me a message. I look forward to hearing from you!
